Nicholas Machiavelli was born in florence May 3, 1469 in the bosom of a noble Florentine family. As a young man he received a rich humanistic education studying classical and Latin works. In any case, of his youth rather little is known until in 1498 he was appointed secretary of the Second Chancellery, who was in charge of Foreign Affairs and War of the city.
The following year he was entrusted with taking charge of various diplomatic missions in Piombino, Imola and Forlí. In addition, he took care of lead the war against Pisa. In 1501 he married Marietta corsini, marriage from which six children were born. Made the ambassador workof personalities such as Emperor Maximilian and César Borgia, who became a great friend of his.
He was an important politician, all the work he did played a great role in the formation of his political thought. This thought was centered in the work of the State and the way of thinking of the rulers. One of his main goals was to make Florence kept sovereignty, as it was continually threatened by other European powers. To do this, he decided to create in 1505 the national militia.
In addition, he acted as an intermediary between King Louis XII of France and Pope Julius II to try to zoom in. The confrontation between the two ended with the defeat of the french. This resulted in the return of the Medici to Florence in 1512.
However, this change in the situation was not good for Machiavelli. Fell from grace, was removed from his post as secretary, accused of treason, imprisoned and tortured in 1513. When he was released from prison, retired to a house of his own just outside the city. There he started write works like The Prince, a book that he dedicated to Lorenzo de Medici but was not published until after his death.
However, after years of retirement, Cardinal Julio de Medici commissioned several missions in 1520. Furthermore, when he became pope under the name of Clement VII in 1523, he appointed Machiavelli fortifications superintendent. But the time of good news and bonanza for Machiavelli would be interrupted by the arrival in 1527 of the troops of King Carlos I of Spain, who invaded and sacked the city of Rome. Due to this, the fall of the Medici took place, which had as a direct consequence the political fall of Machiavelli. Passed away June 21, 1527 without having been stripped of his positions.
Machiavelli's works contain the most varied themes, but his political ideas. Some stand out like Discourses on the first decade of Tito Livio, in which he tries to explain the political systems through which society passes, starting by affirming that the monarchy leads to tyranny, the aristocracy becomes an oligarchy and democracy anarchy, so the monarchy would be reached again.
One of his most outstanding works is The Prince. Is inspired by Cesar Borgia and describes the different types of state depending on their origin. Based on this, the most appropriate political norms would be defined. In conclusion, it states that the ruler must have specific qualitiess like the ability to pretend and disguise in an appropriate way and to adapt moral values and centering them on his person for the state survival.
