Italian police said on Friday they were investigating 70 people for trade thousands of looted archaeological objects, including old coins and vessels, on the eBay internet auction page.
The investigation began when the police found a eBay listing 2009 and located a father and son who were a team of grave robbers in the village of Calabria in southern Italy they had unearthed Byzantine, Greek and Roman tombs.

Police say in a statement that they had seized 16,344 objects including bronze and silver coins, rings and ceramic vessels, as well as 10 metal detectors.
Most of the pieces come from the Calabria region and would have been sold to private collectors. The Carabinieri of Italy have a special department to combat trade in looted objects that continues to increase in the country.
