Cultural manifestations in Ancient Greece

Thecultural manifestations of Ancient Greece they were centered mainly on man.

It was one anthropocentric culture with quite rationalist thinking, which was a great revolution and was the foundation of the way of thinking of Europeans throughout history.

It is impressive the series of incredible figures that a single city, Athens, has left us in all orders of art and culture: historians, playwrights, philosophers, speakers, sculptors, artists at all levels.

We could highlight some of the most valued Greek artistic creations throughout history.

Greek architecture

In architecture it is impressive, for example, the very Acropolis of Athens, built on a hill housing fantastic works such as the Parthenon, considered as the most beautiful and perfect work of Greek art or the Erection with its tribunes of the Caryatids (sculpted female figures with columns or pilasters function).

The Acropolis Athenian makes wonderful use of the difficult topography of the place where it is located.

The great rock on which the Acropolis sits is, of course, not the most suitable place to place a group of buildings, both due to its difficult accessibility and its uneven ground.

But nevertheless, the Greeks knew how to perfectly transform this space, ingeniously constructing high-quality buildings decorated with magnificent sculptures.

Greek sculpture

Focusing on the sculpture we can find the ideals of the Greek people. In archaic times, for example, the critical Ephebo of Critias, which shows the final evolution of the koúros (archaic athlete) around the year 500.

Already in the 5th century BC, in classical times, the Myron's discobolus, in which the artist manages to capture the movement at the moment of maximum balance of the body.

Wave extensive work of Phidias, considered as the model of classicism. They are well known the frieze of the Panateneas and the sculptural decoration of the Parthenon, both works of Phidias.

Finally, in Hellenic times, under the rule of Alexander the Great, we find a quite different sculpture, based on a somewhat bitter realism, there is no longer a place for the ideals of harmony and measures of classical Greece.

Among other works, the Venus de Milo or The Victory of Samothrace, which are both in the Louvre Museum.

As you see the greek heritage is immense, and this is only a small part of how much this civilization has contributed to the formation of our society and that we will see on the blog over time.

As time goes by, we will mention more cultural manifestations in Ancient Greece, just as we will further expand those mentioned in this article.
